MOORHEAD, Minn. — The Saint Mary's baseball team (20-13, 8-6 MIAC) battled through a pair of tightly contested games on the road, earning a split with Concordia College (10-17, 5-9 MIAC) in conference action.
GAME ONE
SMU 5, CC 1
The Cardinals came out with purpose in the opener, striking early with two runs in the second inning to seize a 2-0 advantage. Sam Knickerbocker ignited the rally with a leadoff single, while Ryan Csida followed with a walk to put pressure on the Cobber defense. A pair of Concordia miscues allowed Knickerbocker to cross the plate, and Daniel Sherman delivered with an RBI double to extend the lead.
Concordia responded with a run in the third, but Saint Mary's pitching quickly regained control and kept the Cobbers quiet the rest of the way.
The Cardinals added to their lead in the sixth, capitalizing on Csida's aggressive baserunning and additional lapses by Concordia. Saint Mary's then put the game out of reach in the seventh, scoring two more runs to secure the 5-1 victory.
Saint Mary's finished with eight hits and played error-free defense, while Concordia managed seven hits but stranded nine runners on base.Â
Connor Tulley earned the win on the mound, allowing just one run over four innings while striking out three for his third victory of the season.
GAME TWO
SMU 1, CC 2
The nightcap proved to be a pitcher's duel, with both teams locked in a tight battle throughout.
Concordia broke through in the third inning with a solo home run to take a 1-0 lead, while the Cardinals were unable to capitalize on early opportunities, leaving runners stranded.
The Cobbers added what proved to be the decisive run in the eighth, stretching their lead to 2-0 heading into the final inning.
Saint Mary's mounted a late push in the ninth, as Alex Hanneman sparked the rally with a double and moved to third on a wild pitch. Sherman delivered again, driving in Hanneman with a clutch double to cut the deficit to 2-1. The comeback attempt was halted moments later, however, as Sherman was caught attempting to steal home for the second out of the inning.
The Cardinals were unable to extend the game, settling for the split despite a strong effort in the finale.
Saint Mary's returns to action on Saturday, April 25, hosting Gustavus Adolphus for a conference doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
