A Senior Day Walk Off: Cardinals Split with Oles

WINONA, Minn. – A little senior day magic helped the Saint Mary's baseball team (22-15, 10-8 MIAC) to a conference split with St. Olaf (13-23, 8-10 MIAC) in the final home game of the season. The sunny Sunday afternoon was a perfect day to celebrate the 16 seniors who have made a difference in the program as they fell 8-3 in game one before a walkoff in game two, 3-2.

GAME ONE

STO 8, SMU 3

Early errors proved costly as the Cardinals dropped game one 8-3 to the Oles.

The Oles tacked on two runs at the top of the first on two hits. After the Cardinals found themselves down 5-0 after the second inning, they added their first run when Ryan Csida brought home Reese Berg on a double.

The teams decided to trade runs each inning but the early lead from the Oles proved to be too much to overcome.

Chances came from Gavan Schultes double to send Josh Costello home in the third and Costello sending Sam Knickerbocker home in the fourth.

GAME TWO

SMU 3, STO 2

It was a rollercoaster game two for the squads.

What was a stalemate until the fourth inning, a 1-0 lead by the Oles, turned into a special senior day walk off to secure the win.

The Cardinals tied the game 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning after Costello sent Knickerbocker home after he reached on a walk earlier in the inning. The Oles responded right away with a run in the sixth to regain control.

Tension was rising as it came down to the final inning for the Cardinals to make something happen. Drew Rothenberger was walked before Daniel Sherman moved him to second off a single. The bats kept rolling after Costello hit a deep single to send home Rothenberger before Colin Nigl moved everyone up a base on his sacrifice hit.

With the winning run at third, Dom Najacht felt no pressure and hit an infield single to walk it off.

The Cardinals ended with nine hits, one more than the Oles, in the victory.

Connor Olson picked up his first win of the season in his outing.

The team looks to close out the regular season on the road on Friday, May 1 at Carleton. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m. in the crucial doubleheader to determine a postseason berth.
