MgGinnis Powers Fast Start with Grand Slam and the Sweep

ROCHESTER, Minn. — The No. 4 Saint Mary's softball team wasted no time making a statement on MIAC Opening Day. After weather delays reshuffled the schedule, the Cardinals (16-2, 2-0 MIAC) returned to the field in dominant fashion, sweeping Augsburg (6-14, 1-3 MIAC) with back-to-back 12-0, five-inning victories.

GAME ONE (5 INNINGS)
SMU 12, AUG 0

The Cardinals opened conference play with authority, piling up 12 runs on 12 hits while holding Augsburg to just one hit in a five-inning shutout.

Makayla Steffes set the tone in the circle, tossing four dominant innings while allowing just one hit and striking out six. Naleyah Bork closed the door with a clean fifth inning to complete the combined one-hit shutout.

Offensively, Saint Mary's wasted no time seizing control. Megan McGinnis delivered the game's defining moment in the first inning, blasting an inside-the-park grand slam to give the Cardinals an immediate 4-0 advantage. McGinnis finished with five RBIs in a standout performance, one short of the program's individual game record.

Erin Parker sparked the offense from the top of the lineup, scoring three runs, collecting two hits, and swiping a base. Zoe Fink provided a key boost off the bench, ripping a pinch-hit double to drive in three runs during a decisive fourth inning.

The Cardinals put the game out of reach in that fourth frame, stringing together timely hits and aggressive baserunning to push their lead into double digits. With steady defense backing their pitchers, Saint Mary's never allowed Augsburg to find any rhythm.

GAME TWO (5 INNINGS)
SMU 12, AUG 0

Saint Mary's carried its momentum straight into game two, erupting for eight runs in the opening inning and cruising to a second straight 12-0 win in five innings.

The Cardinals once again tallied 12 hits and showcased a balanced attack throughout the lineup. Alexandra Gerber led the charge with two hits, two runs scored, and two RBIs, while Kenzie Gatz starred both in the circle and at the plate. Gatz struck out seven over four innings of one-hit pitching and added a double and an RBI offensively.

The first inning proved overwhelming for Augsburg. Gerber ignited the rally with a bunt single and stolen base before Steffes drove her in. Steffes then flashed her speed on the basepaths, stealing second and third before scoring on a Peyton Berg single. Defensive miscues by Augsburg, combined with RBI doubles from McGinnis and Gatz, helped the Cardinals build an 8-0 cushion before the Auggies could record momentum.

Saint Mary's continued to apply pressure in the third inning, capitalizing on errors and timely hitting. Brianna Nusbaum and Olivia Poulin both came around to score, while RBIs from Rhiannon Carroll and Gabbie Grover added to the commanding lead.

With another dominant pitching performance and airtight defense, the Cardinals sealed their second straight shutout, allowing just one hit while striking out nine.

After nearly a month away from competition, Saint Mary's made a resounding return, outscoring Augsburg 24-0 in the doubleheader and firmly establishing itself atop the conference standings early.

The Cardinals will look to carry that momentum on the road Tuesday, April 7, when they travel to Carleton for a MIAC doubleheader beginning at 3:30 p.m.
