WINONA, Minn. – It was a tough battle to open the NCAA DIII Softball Super Regional for the Saint Mary's softball team (40-8). The Cardinals fell in the opening best of three series to the Simpson Storm (38-6), 8-3, on Thursday afternoon.
Simpson faithful made the trip up to Winona, where the Cardinals are the hosts of the final regional tournament for the second consecutive season, and brought the energy with them as they came out firing.
An early two-run RBI double from the Storm put the Cardinals down 2-0 at the bottom of the first inning. The Cardinals could not seem to find an answer.Â
The energy seemingly diminished for the Cardinals as the Storm added if not one run to each inning, two.Â
The Cardinals answered back putting their first run on the board in the third after a lead off single by Amanda Teschky was brought home by Megan McGinnis to trail 3-1. The Storm, however, countered with another run.
It wasn't until the sixth inning the Cardinals started to gain some energy. After finding themselves with the bases loaded after two walks and an error created the life. Abbie Stigler got the scoring started with a sacrifice fly bringing in the first run of the inning. The Cardinals kept it going after Brianna Nusbaum let it fly down the right side to score another and move another to trail 6-3.Â
That energy came all too late for the Cardinals as it was already the bottom of the sixth, and the Storms had added two more to their lead as well with a home run, 8-3.
The Cardinals ran out of time for a rally and dropped game one of the tournament.Â
"I think just working pitch by pitch," said senior Jacqueline Avilez on the team's energy late. "Winning every at bat and pitch that you can."
"We didn't execute very well today," said head coach John Tschida. "We didn't execute hardly anything today, the plays are there and we must take advantage of it."
Now facing elimination, the team must take advantage of the plays tomorrow.
The teams are set to match back up tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. with the season on the line for the Cardinals.
