BLAINE, Minn. — Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men’s hockey season gets underway this weekend, as all nine teams take part in the three-day MIAC Men’s Hockey Showcase at Fogerty Ice Arena.

The Auggies are coming off a fifth-place finish a year ago. Augsburg made its third straight appearance in the MIAC?Tournament, falling to Gustavus 4-3 in double-overtime in the opening round. … The Auggies 2 OT playoff loss to Gustavus marked the second straight year Augsburg was ousted from post-season play in multiple-overtime — falling to GAC?6-5 in four overtimes in 2010. … Augsburg has now appeared in post-season play in four of the five seasons under head coach Chris Brown. … Augsburg’s 14 wins in 2010-11 marked the second straight season in which the Auggies posted 10 or more wins. Augsburg also recorded eight MIAC?victories for the third straight season a year ago. … The Auggies hit the ice this season without their top four scorers from a year ago, including Joel Sauer, a Second-Team All-American as a senior a year ago. … A two-time All-MIAC?First-Teamer, Sauer finished the 2010-11 season as the MIAC's scoring champion, leading the league in points (39) and points in conference games-only (24). … Justin Lochner started 23 of the team’s 26 games in goal as a sophomore last season, compiling a 2.57 GAA, and a .917 save percentage. … The Auggies played seven overtime games last season, going 3-1-3. … Twelve of Augsburg’s 26 games a year ago were decided by one goal or less.

The Royals enter 2011-2012 after finishing ninth in conference play in coach Charlie Burggraf’s first season at the helm. … The Royals return a pair of All-MIAC?First-Teamers in defenseman Jon Crouse and forward Jack Paul. … Paul closed out his sophomore campaign as the team’s leader in goals (22) and points (35), while Crouse  scored five goals and added 18 assists for 23 points. … Paul and Crouse were two of eight Royals who recorded 10 or more points during the 2010-11 campaign — with only graduated senior Christian Fogerty (7 G, 18 A, 25 Pts) not on this year’s roster. … Paul’s 22 goals accounted for nearly one-third of the team’s 79 goals scored last season. … Bethel got goals from 17 different players, while 20 players recorded at least one point last season. … Zach Bush appeared in 18 of the’s 25 games between the pipes a year ago, recording a 4.01 GAA and an .881 save percentage. … Bethel was held to one goal or less just three times a year ago, while scoring a season-high 10 goals in a 10-1 win over Northland on Dec. 11. … Bethel compiled a 2-4-1 record when scoring first, but was just 2-13-3 when the Royals’ opponent scored the game’s first goal. … Bethel played five overtime games in 2010-11, going 0-1-4.

The Pipers enjoyed a storybook seaosn in 2010-11, winning both the MIAC?regular-season and tournament titles, while also reaching the NCAA?National Tournament quarterfinals, where they dropped a 4-0 decision to eventual national champion St. Norbert. … The Pipers’ regular-season title was their second in the last four years, while the NCAA?appearance was the first in school history. … There will be a new face behind the bench for Hamline this season, as Scott Steffen, a 1997 Piper graduate, takes the helm from Scott Bell. … The Pipers will kick off this season without two-time All-American and 2010-11 MIAC and Division III?Player of the Year Chris Berenguer. The Oles are coming off a sixth-place finish in the MIAC?a year ago, closing out the season with back-to-back wins over Saint John’s. … When the Oles take the ice this seaosn, they will be without the services of leading scorer Isak Tranvik, who led the team in both assists (18) and points (23) during his senior year in 2010-11. … Despite the loss of Tranvik, the Oles do return six of the seven players that recorded 10 or more points last season. … Defenseman Derek Grogan earned All-MIAC?First-Team honors a year ago, recording eight goals and nine assists for 17 points. … Peter Rohn was the team’s goal-scoring leader a year ago with 11 and was second to Tranvik with 21 points. … The graduation of All-MIAC?First-Teamer Nick Krause leaves a void between the Pipes for the Oles.
