Jake Bids Farewell
As freshmen, we would all have liked to stand up on our pedestals and pretend we felt deeply devoted to this group and culture, even before we knew what it was all about. It seems like it was just yesterday that my freshman self wandered out of Benilde Hall and walked onto Max Molock field for the very first time. On that day, sitting in the dugout as a quirky eighteen-year-old, everything about my life to that point was made up on what happens on the field and in between the chalk lines. Looking back, it’s funny to think about what I thought and wanted to achieve from my four years here, wasn’t really what I came here to find. I remember many conversations with Kevin Miley talking about the end of our careers here at Saint Mary’s and our reasons for coming here to play baseball. In our words, you ended up leaving this place not with a baseball in hand or whatever else you came here with. You ended up leaving here with a special group of people that you want to surround yourself with for the rest of your life. And I’ve been lucky to be a part of that, and it will forever serve a special place inside of me.
Going back to my freshman year, the Senior Salutes have always been one of my favorite things to read. It’s crazy to think that it’s now my turn to write one. The only place I know where to really start is by first, saying that I have been so blessed and privileged to have been surrounded by so many people here at Saint Mary’s, which has helped shape me into the person that I am today.
I would first like to thank my parents, Kevin and Candy. I know at this point in my life, I’m considered an adult. I know that maybe sometimes that I don’t completely act like it, but that’s part of this whole process… Am I right? As I’m continuing to grow up, I realize just how much you guys have done for me. And, for that, I need to truly say thank you. Something that I don’t think I’ve appropriately done so yet. Dad, thank you for always giving me the support that I needed to build a dream to chase after. As your son, it has always been gratifying to know that after every game, no matter the circumstance, there was always someone there to say how proud they are of me but also push me in the right direction at the same time. Mom, even though I am very grateful for all of the significant things you have done for me, I have always been thankful for your personality. Though I came a little late for you, you have always had a great outlook on life that has made me lucky to realize just how perfect life really can be. I know you two make a lot of sacrifices for our family, and I hope to someday re-pay you with what you guys have given to all of us as a family. Without each of you, I’d be nowhere near the person I am today and the person I’m still working on becoming. There aren’t enough words in the world to express my appreciation, but I hope this is a good start.
Lauren & Josh, Of course, each family has their own story and dynamic, I think ours is a little bit special. Every little brother has distinctive experiences with their older siblings, and I’m pretty fortunate to have shared many with you guys. Growing up with an older brother and sister can sometimes have its joys or nightmares. However, I was lucky enough to experience both. You two are very inspirational, and I just wanted to say thank you for what you guys have done for me.
Tay, I can’t believe that at the same time we will both be moving on in new and exciting directions of our lives. We’ve shared many great memories at our respected places, and you’ve helped make this time the most memorable of my life. For some reason, you have always had the patience to put up with the chaotic schedule that comes along with dating a student-athlete and for that, I thank you. I still really don’t know to this day if you had much of an interest in baseball before you met me, but that’s what makes you special, because I know no matter what I did or would do, you would support me with the best of your being.
766, Schlem, thanks for freezing the pipes, man. Really appreciate it. Krysiak, it’s crazy to think that just about 2 years ago you were enjoying an all-conference campaign along side all of us. It’s a shame to think what could have been, but I know everything happens for a reason and it’s been great to grow along side of you through these four years. Freddy, I’m going to be honest, coming into this year I had no idea what to expect about becoming one of your roommates. However, you turned from being an acquaintance to becoming one of my best friends in just a short 9 months. I don’t know if it was much of an upgrade from living on campus, but it was definitely a learning experience for us all.
Chubs, Before I get to anything else, as the moment I am writing this, I just wanted to say yes, I am wearing all of your clothes. Now we can get that out of the way, I’m so endlessly grateful for everything that you’ve done for me up to this point. So many things have changed since the first day of freshmen year; it’s kind of scary. But since that first day, we’ve always held a special connection with each other. I don’t know where you and I will be in the near future, but I just wanted you to know that you will forever be a brother to me. Thanks, Chubs.
Next, to all of the coaches:
Coach Winecke, Coach Jacobson, and Coach Whaley – Being a part of something bigger than yourself is definitely something easier said than done. However, you guys have made that cemented into the foundation of the program, and that will forever stick with me. Being on this team has made the last four years the most exciting of my life. You guys have taught me everything from respecting the process to embracing the journey of life’s ups and downs, with a little bit of baseball mixed in there as well. All of you coaches work so hard to put the university and us in the best possible position to succeed, and I truly want to give you my appreciation for that and every other impact that you’ve had on my life. You guys are great people to look up to in all different aspects of life. Also, just wanted to say good luck to you, Coach Jake, on your future endeavors. Even though you’ve turned into the softest coach in the MIAC and remind me of Ryan Gosling from The Notebook, I know that wherever you will be, you will attract great people and be successful.
Coach Krone, I don’t know why, but I think you still hold a grudge from when we were catch partners. Yes, I obviously wanted to build some more arm strength, but most of the time I would do it just to make you mad (It was too easy). However, I will miss your relentless attitude that will always be very contagious. Can’t wait to catch you in the Alumni game next year, bud.
Coach Sagar and Coach Kinne, what you guys have done here at Saint Mary’s in your short amount of time is something short of amazing. I’m not going to lie, there were many times where I didn’t want to show up and quit, but you guys held standards higher than we’ve ever had here. Thanks for all the sacrifice and hard work that you guys put in.
To all of the seniors:
After another exciting year, I know our time together will soon end. What all six of us has achieved together is something that not a lot of other classes from different teams and programs can say. You guys have all taught me so much, and for that, I’m grateful that we could all be a part of the same class.
Dave, You know Big Bar, even though I had to put all the work into our friendship because you were too busy with all your girls. I still have found time to appreciate everything you do for me. Even if it is talking crap to Raske and MDB about me behind my back on your lunch dates… Don’t worry, I still think you’re a good guy at times. When people say you’re a hard worker though, I think that is just an understatement. You’re on the next level of hard work, and it is very infectious on me. Overall Big Bar, I’m glad our relationship has grown throughout the years to where it is now and I know I can always call you a friend for life.
Kev, Sometimes throughout life you meet certain people that have made such a positive influence on your life that you don’t really know what or where you would be without them. For myself, you are that person. Calling you in the summer and discussing the Bachelorette with you is not something a lot of friendships have. Also, I’ll never forget our GT’s in RF that we shared, or going to the furthest away McDonald’s from campus just to get away from things. You are still the greatest guy of all time and I hope to enjoy some more Kwik Trip cookies and some Big Buddies with you in the future.
Schlem, I will put this in writing here, and want to make this known that I first declared you as “Big Dawg,” I think I deserve a thank you for that. I’m going to really miss all of your debatable topics that you tend to bring up, as it almost always seemed like everyday there was something new with you. But hey, at least I knew that when you were on my side of the argument, I would usually win because of forfeit. Nonetheless, your skills on the field were pretty sick and having the pleasure of playing with someone like the caliber of yours was special. Thanks for everything, Jonny.
Reags, I remember first meeting you as a freshman, thinking that this kid is too nice for his own well-being. I honestly thought you were being sarcastic because you were so nice. I’ve had such a blast alongside of you all my four years here as a pitcher. You have always had a special attitude toward things, and I know that will get you where you want to go in life. Since day one, you have always been making others around you better, and that is a skill that not a lot of other people have. I still can’t believe you M/O with a B.C. though.
Drewy – Sup, Batman. I’m not going to lie here, I’ve always been jealous of the fact that you hang out with Michaela over me. It’s okay though, I’ll try to get over it. Nonetheless, you have powered through many physical obstacles to be an everyday player for the team, which makes you one of the toughest players I’ve ever had the chance of playing with. The city of St. Paul will be clean before we know it with you roaming the streets. By the way, Superman is going to end the Batman. It’s inevitable.
Joe Miley, **Clearing Throat** And I’m singing: Say what you need to say, say what you need to say… Even though you never had my back, I am so glad you made the decision to come be a smumen. Even though you were the most mediocre manager in the nation, I don’t think this campus would have been the same without you and your brother here. I’m really anticipating the day we can both use the starter kit together.
To all the juniors – These past three years that I have shared with you have produced some great friendships that I hope prolongs in the future. Can’t wait to see you guys lead this team next year.
Benny J, Babyyy!! You are a special person, which has always held a unique enthusiasm. You have given a new and winning attitude to this pitching staff that will forever live on. Thanks for lending me your closet when I needed it too (Don’t worry, I’ll give everything back). Also can’t wait to wear the orange and black with you this summer.
Whitey, I’m not going to lie, when you first stayed on campus for your visit, I wasn’t really that big of a fan of yours. However, through the years, my outlook on you as changed a complete 180. You’re a hard worker who deserves everything you get. If you keep with that mindset, you will be as successful as you want to be. Please never wear that Banana suit in public again.
Cakes Awesome, you are one of the most underrated good guys on the team. I know I’ve been hard on you at times, but that’s because I know just how good you can be. Keep with it man, you’re fun to watch. Also, word on the street is that chicks dig the baldhead look now. You should thank your dad when you get the chance.
Willie, you’re an exceptional human being and someone that I will never forget. You are the only 5-tool player that I’ve ever had the chance of playing with, and it was special to be around. For how good of a player you are, you’re even a better guy. I don’t think in my life have I ever seen girls jaws drop after they watch someone run before, but thanks for making that into a reality. Look forward to seeing you soon, man.
Cale, I’ve been waiting all year to say this, but I support you sticking out your chest. However, I don’t support all the wrist tape you use every game, and asking people to feel your butt. That’s kinda weird, bro. Even when you go to far on me sometimes when I call you out, I still think you’re a good guy at the end of the day. I’m glad I could call you one of my good friends and want to say thank you for everything you’ve done for me. Look forward to seeing how you adjust to the city life this summer.
Alec, didn’t you squat yesterday? People don’t say this enough in the fact that people like you is what makes this team and my experience here great. You’re not just a hard-worker; you’re also a person that I can depend on no matter what the situation is at hand. Next time, I’ll look out when I slap you on the head. Keep being inspiring for the people around you. Thanks, rolls.
Red dog, howdy! Do you want to know the good news? You’re still a great guy and I love you. I think your one of the most genuine persons out there and I’m glad that I have come across a person like you. It was always a joy to talk about life with, and no matter what, you would always support me. I’m coming to visit you in Middleton this summer.
Peder, if someone were to ask me what kind of person that I would want to have around me at all times, I would probably always choose you. You are someone that has the power to change lives, and I am forever grateful for your impact that you’ve had on me. And yes, I did sweat today.
Ketch, first thing I want to say is that your hard work doesn’t go unnoticed. I have a profound respect for you and everything that you’ve done for this team and me. Good luck in the future, man. I’m gonna miss seeing you everyday.
Shawny, with every conversation that I have with you, there’s always laughter following it. I had such a joy playing and sharing many memories with you. You’re smile and attitude is infectious not only for me, but for the whole team. Keep with it, dude. Good luck in the future.
Frosty, it sucks that you had to go through another injury this year, especially on such a sweet play. However, I know you will come back hungry next year to achieve whatever goals you will have. Keyword there is hungry. Also, give the boys a break next year and sleep in Erika’s room once in a while.
Powers, I really wish I had kept track of how many paddles and other miscellaneous items I’ve broken because of you. Besides when we were enemies on the Ping-Pong table, we had some great times and I know whatever you set your mind to, you will achieve. I’m excited to see you dice next year and in the meantime your first in line to be my financial advisor.
Fejt, I’m so glad you decided to come to SMU. I’m definitely going miss seeing you around all the time because I always enjoyed my time around you. Meeting a person like you with a passion like yours is something that makes me very appreciative of the opportunity that I have to play the game of baseball. I’ve never seen anyone else join me in the dance studio like you have. Keep up the good work, and there better be lines of tape all over the place by the time I visit next year.
Steph, even though you are the president and founder of DAC, you’re too hilarious to talk to and your mustache will forever live on as the worst the MIAC has ever seen. It’s been incredibly fun to play with you over the past 3 years, but I’m glad I can call you a good friend of mine. I can’t wait to see the work you will do on teams next year.
Ricky, in my eyes, it’s crazy to think about all the things you do and accomplish. Not only are you a full-time student and also our student president, you also find time to make the team a priority. I have never seen you shy away from work, and I have endless respect for that. Thanks for everything, Rick. I better catch you on TV soon.
To the sophomores,
Bartosz, when Gannon graduated I was really kind of worried that I wouldn’t find another friend with the same caliber of good looks, personality, and baseball ability. However, you filled that void in all of his aspects… lol Jk breh. All jokes aside though you are one of my best friends here and I appreciate everything you’ve done for me. You have a personality that can get along with anyone and I was lucky I’ve always had someone like you to talk to. I also can’t wait to see you on that bump next year.
Cherry, though you often stress me out every time I talk to you, you always seem to have a funny grin on your face. I can sense plenty of aspiration that comes from you, and I hope you keep working hard to achieve your goals. Good luck to you, man.
Buerkle, even though you can hit bombs, you are still the softest guy in the MIAC. I loved playing with you, but loved even more watching you try to slide. Keep being a hard worker and stay true to yourself. Good luck, and I hope I never have to pitch to you again.
Matuska, I still to this day think you go to Sun Tan City everyday secretly behind all of our backs. There’s no way anyone is ever that tan this far after spring break. I do support it, however. Besides the fact, it is enjoyable to see you work hard everyday on the field and in the weight room. Keep it up, man and good luck to you next year.
Connor, you are one of the best teammates on the team and you have always gotten people to push themselves harder on a daily basis. You have no idea how big of a role that is. I’ve always loved watching you playing the game of baseball, getting dirty and diving around because I know you truly want to get the best out of yourself and the team. Good luck next year as well, dude.
Waters, I hope you know that I’m glad I can finally start calling someone by the name of Wiz-Waz. You have always been good to me, and I hope you can say the same. Keep working hard, man and I can’t wait to see what kind of player you turn into in the future.
Jacobs, even though you come off as a really shy person, you are undoubtedly one of the funniest kids on the team. You’re a fellow GD major that I have tremendous respect for and I can’t wait to see what you create in the future. I also can’t wait to see what pitcher you become. Keep working hard man. You told me to take a shot at you in this, but I can’t do it, you’re too good of a guy.
Prim, Daad? I wanted to take this opportunity to say thank you for everything you’ve done for the team and myself. I know the switch you had to make wasn’t just an easy change, but it was an evolution. Maybe too deep, but that was the only way I could put it in words. You’ve done so much for the squad, and I will forever be grateful for that. I’m gonna miss you, man.
To the freshmen class:
I know sometimes the college-athlete lifestyle can be a tough one to venture. You hear it all the time from other people. I just want to say that everyone goes through these tough times and I promise if you keep working hard, you will be able to achieve whatever you want to. Us older guys always wonder where we would be if we never chose Saint Mary’s. Truth is, there’s no other place I would rather be or rather gone. Just make sure to yourself that you make most of the rest of the time you have here. You’ll thank yourself in the long run. Because trust me, time goes by fast.
Last but not least, I want to say thanks to all of the past players to wear the cardinal baseball uniform. If it weren’t for all of you guys, my experience here wouldn’t have been the same. Every class that I’ve gotten the opportunity to play with has taught me so many different lessons, which has produced so many life-long friends and relationships. From Curt, Danny, and Max… to Vince, Teddy, Serv, Krone, Mikey, Tessmer, Nord, and Minder… all the way to Paul, Kev, Pat, Thele, Merk, and Wolfe. You guys are all so special to me and have left a lasting legacy on the culture and program here.
Thanks everyone, I am forever grateful.
