Does Saint Mary’s Plan to discontinue additional varsity sports?
Not at this time. We will continue to monitor our athletics program to ensure we provide the best
possible experience for our student-athletes and supporters as part of our commitment to a robust
athletics program. We are also committed to remaining a member of the Minnesota Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference (MIAC). MIAC Section C. Membership Criteria states that all MIAC coeducational
member institutions must sponsor a minimum of eight varsity sports for men and eight varsity sports for
women. Given the MIAC championship season schedule and sponsorship requirements, member
institutions must sponsor a minimum of two sports in each collegiate athletic season (fall, winter, and
spring). Member institutions must sponsor at least one individual championship sport in each collegiate
athletic season and at least one team championship sport in each collegiate athletic season.
Why men’s and women’s golf and men’s and women’s swimming?
Roster numbers were declining to the point we felt we could not provide a competitive environment for
student-athletes. (five members in women’s golf, 10 in men’s golf, nine in women’s swimming, and five
in men’s swimming.) Per NCAA rules, swimming and diving teams need to compete in eight meets per
season with a minimum of eight athletes. Golf teams are required to participate in six contests with a
minimum of four participants.
Why was the decision made at this time?
The university is required to inform MIAC by December 1, 2019, about changes impacting the 2020-21
season.
How will current student-athletes be impacted by this decision?
We as an entire athletic department will continue to strive in offering the best student-athlete
experience possible for Cardinal student-athletes both in the classroom and in competition.
Will the pool remain open at Saint Mary’s?
Yes
Does the money saved from discontinuing these sports remain in the Athletics Department?
Yes. As a result of this decision, we ensure all other athletic programs remain viable, competitive, and a
source of pride for Saint Mary’s student-athletes.
