Ryan Egan is the head men’s hockey coach at Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota, a position he has held since the start of the 2019-2020 academic school year.
Egan guided the Cardinals to nine wins in his first year at the helm in 2019-20 — including a pair of victories over nationally ranked teams en route to claiming the tournament title at the Pathfinder/Oswego State Holiday Classic in Oswego, N.Y. Saint Mary's beat No. 10 Oswego State 1-0 in their first game, then clinched the crown with a 4-2 win over No. 14 Williams.
During his second season, Egan and the Cardinals had to play through the COVID-19 pandemic, being limited to an 11-game schedule vs. only MIAC schools. Egan's Cardinals finished 8-14-1 overall in 2021-22, earning the No. 6 seed in the MIAC Playoffs, falling to third-seeded Saint John's 5-1 in the quarterfinals.
Saint Mary's returned to the MIAC Playoffs during the 2023-24 season, locking up the No. 4 seed with a sweep of Concordia in the final weekend of the regular season. SMU's post-season run came to a screeching halt, however, with a 3-0 loss to St. Olaf in the quarterfinals.
Egan is no stranger to Saint Mary's, having served as the Cardinal men's hockey team's assistant coach from 2009 to 2014.
After leaving Saint Mary's, Egan spent two years as head coach and general manager of the La Crosse Freeze in the NA3HL, and then was named the head coach/general manager for the Coulee Region Chill in the NAHL. During this first season in the NAHL (2016-17), the Chill set a franchise record for NCAA Division college commitments. He spent last season as head coach and general manager of the College Station Spirit (recently renamed the Texas Roadrunners) of the NA3HL.
Egan began his coaching career with the Omaha Energy AAA program, where he was program director and head coach. Egan then moved on to guide the San Antonio Diablos (WSHL).
