Laura Sonday is a volunteer assistant men's and women's tennis coach at Saint Mary's University of Minnesota, a position she has held since the start of the 2020-21 academic school year.
Sonday closed out a storied collegiate career at Saint Mary’s in 2019 by being the recipient of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference’s Chris Evert Award — which annually recognizes a senior women’s tennis student-athlete who exhibits outstanding sportsmanship and exemplary athletic, academic and humanitarian accomplishments.
Â
The Chris Evert Award was just the tip of the post-season iceberg for the Cardinals, as Sonday was also named First-Team All-MIAC in both singles and doubles for the second straight year.
Â
Sonday played every match of her collegiate career at No. 1 singles — a run of 79 consecutive matches — and capped off that four-year run with a 14-6 showing this season. She closed out her career ranked No. 2 all-time in singles wins with 58, while also ranking No. 2 in doubles wins with 54.
Â
Sonday and doubles partner Colleen Lois proved to be a nightmare for opposing coaches when teamed together in doubles play, as the dynamic duo finished 11-8 overall, including a 6-4 showing in 10 conference matches — all at No. 1 doubles. In their two years as a doubles team, Sonday/Lois have compiled a 26-12 overall record.
