ST. CLOUD, Minn. — Last Wednesday, the Saint Mary's University women's tennis team posted its first Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win of the season, rolling to an 8-1 victory over Bethel.
Saturday afternoon, the Cardinals made it two straight — twice.
The Cardinals not only won their second consecutive conference match Saturday against Concordia, but they did it by the same score — 8-1.
"The ladies really played a solid match," said SMU coach
Jeff Halberg, whose women had beaten Concordia 7-2 in their lone meeting a year ago. "I thought when we beat them last year, we played very well, and today, we were even better."
Things didn't go quite as well for the SMU men against the Cobbers, as Concordia handed the Cardinals a 7-2 setback.
"Concordia's men's team is very good, and I thought we gave them a pretty good run for their money," Halberg said. "So many of the matches we played were just battles from start to finish. It would have been nice to pick up a win, but I was very pleased with the way the guys played."
The SMU women cruised to six straight-set singles wins, then added an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles and an 8-6 victory at No. 3 to complete the rout.
Tony Miller (Rochester, Minn.) and
David Reckase (La Crosse, Wis.) were the lone winners for the SMU men, with Miller posting a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles, while Reckase was a 6-0, 6-1 winner at No. 6.
