ST. PAUL, Minn. — Saint Mary's University men's tennis coach Jeff Halberg knew that his Cardinals — at full strength — would have their hands full when they squared off against Hamline Tuesday afternoon.

Shorthanded, like the Cardinals were Tuesday, was another story.

With two of their top six singles players sidelined with injuries — and another playing with a bum shoulder — the Cardinals were no match for the Pipers, as Hamline posted five straight-set singles wins, and swept the three doubles matches in handing SMU an 8-1 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference setback.

"We're pretty banged up right now and we just weren't deep enough to give them a run for their money," said Halberg. "We were without two of our top six singles players (Tom Vollman and Tony Miller), and Adam (Solseth) is playing with a really beat up shoulder. I knew that, at full strength, it was going to be a battle, but shorthanded like we were today, we just couldn't keep pace."

David Reckase (La Crosse, Wis.) picked up SMU's lone win vs. the Pipers, posting a 6-4, 6-2 victory at No. 4 singles.

"It's disappointing to lose a match like this, but I'm proud of our effort," said Halberg. "Everyone played hard."
