LAKE FOREST, Ill. — If the Saint Mary's University men's hockey team was feeling any ill effects from Friday's heartbreaking 3-2, overtime loss against top-ranked St. Nobrert, they certainly didn't show it Saturday.
In fact, the Cardinals used Saturday's final nonconference game as a chance to take out their frustrations.
Lake Forest just happened to be the unlucky recipient of the Cardinals' wrath.
David Gross (Grasston, Minn.) recorded hist first collegiate hat trick, as the Cardinals rebounded from Friday's disappointing loss with a 7-4 nonconference win over the Foresters.
"I thought we played very well offensively," said SMU coach Don Olson, whose team has now won five of its last six games. "It wasn't the prettiest game, there wasn't a lot of flow to the game, but we got the win, and that was the important part."
Kelly Kranz (Bloomington, Minn.) highlighted the Cardinals' three-goal first period, as the SMU freshman netted his first collegiate goal in helping SMU to a 3-1 first-period lead.
Gross and
Mike Glaesmer (Traverse City, Mich.) each scored in the second period, giving the Cardinals a 5-2 advantage heading into the third period, where SMU matched Lake Forest's two third-period goals, getting two more goals from Gross en route to the win.
"I was happy to see us bounce back the way we did (after Friday's loss)," said Olson, whose team improves to 6-6-2 heading into next Friday's conference game against Hamline. "It's nice to head into the final (conference) stretch with a win under our belt."
