WINONA, Minn. — After giving up 51 shots and nine goals in their season-opening 9-1 loss to St. Scholastica Friday evening, the last thing the Saint Mary's University men's hockey team wanted was to faced another high-flying offense in their second game of the season.
Like UW-Superior's.
The Yellowjackets entered Saturday's nonconference game against the Cardinals having scored 21 goals in their first three games.
And UW-Superior left the SMU Ice Arena with their seven-goal-a-game average — and then some — as the Yellowjackets erupted for four goals in both the second and third periods en route to a 10-3 nonocnference victory.
“I sure didn't want to open the season like that, but what can you do? St. Scholastica and UW-Superior are two outstanding hockey teams — definitely a tough way to start the year,” said SMU head coach
Bill Moore, whose team dropped a 9-1 decision in Friday's opener against St. Scholastica. “On the bright side, we got a glimpse of what we are a capable of in the third period, but by that time, it was too late.
“We need to play like we did in the game's last six minutes from the start —if we can do that, we're going to be OK.”
The Yellowjackets jumped out to a 2-0 first-period lead on goals by Rob Turville and Kevin Huck, then erupted for four more in the second and four more in the third to ice the win.
SMU finally got its offense on track late in the third period, as the Cardinals'
Anthony Bohn (Spring Hill, Fla.),
Matt Staehely (Shorewood, Ill) and
Steve Murphy (Anchorage, Alaska) scored all beat UW-Superior goalie Chad Beiswenger in the game's final six minutes.
“I'm looking at the way the game ended — those last six minutes are what we need to focus on,” said Moore, whose team was outshot 49-45, with
Scott Pederson (Lake Villa, Ill.) kicking out 39 shots in his first collegiate start for the Cardinals. “We didn't play too well early, but we got better as the game went on, and, hopefully, we can just keep building off of that.”
