MOORHEAD, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University women's hockey team put an end to a 15-game streak in which the Cardinals had allowed three or more goals in a game Saturday, holding high-powered Concordia to just two goals.

Unfortunately for SMU, the Cardinals could have held the Cobbers to one goal — and still lost.

For the second time in three games, SMU failed to score, as Concordia handed the Cardinals their fourth straight loss, a 2-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference setback at the Moorhead Sports Center.

“Offensively, we are struggling a bit right now,” said SMU coach Terry Mannor, whose team lost the opening game against the Cobbers, 5-2, and has now scored just three goals in their last four games — all conference losses. “We certainly had our share of chances today, we just couldn't seem to catch a break. Even the officials said to me after the game that they've never seen a team as unlucky as we were.

“We came close a number of times — but close doesn't cut it.”

After a scoreless first period, the Cobbers got all the offense they would need, as Bre Bian beat SMU goalie Madeline Lenz (White Bear Lake, Minn.) just 39 seconds into the second stanza. Bian would add her second of the game and third of the season midway through the third period to seal the Cobbers' win.

“Concordia is a very good team — one of the teams picked to finish first or second in the conference,” said Mannor, whose team has now lost to a pair of unbeaten conference powers in Gustavus and Concordia. “I thought we played a pretty solid game, and we did a lot of good things all weekend.

“Unfortunately, moral victories aren't going to get you very far in our conference.”
