The Cardinals are coming off their second straight nonconference game against UW-Eau Claire. After opening the season with a 3-1 loss at UW-EC last Saturday, SMU erupted for five goals — including the game-winner by Sheree Haslemore (Gore, New Zealand) two minutes into overtime — en route to a 5-4 victory Friday at the SMU Ice Arena. … Lake Forest, meanwhile, has been of since last Saturday, when the Foresters opened their season with a 5-0 victory over Chatham.

A Year Ago: SMU and Lake Forest met twice a year ago, with Lake Forest coming away with a win and a tie. Ingrid Klockars (Wheaton, Ill.) and Amy Zimniewicz scored second-period goals in helping the Cardinals to a series-opening 2-2 tie. SMU managed two goals again in the rematch — one by Katie Cachey (Orland Park, Ill.) and one by Caiti Knudson (Plymouth, Minn .) — but it was not enough, as Lake Forest came away with the 4-2 victory.

All-Time Series Record: With their 1-0-1 performance a year ago, the Foresters improved to 7-4-3 all-time against the Cardinals.

Cardinal Notes: With their win Friday, the Cardinals put an end to their six-game losing streak vs. the Blugolds, dating back to a 5-1 SMU win on Nov. 5, 2005. … Friday's win was also SMU's first nonconference win since a 4-2 victory over Finlandia on Feb. 4, 2006, a span of 12 games (0-10-2). … The Cardinals snapped yet another streak with their Friday win, putting an end to a seven-game winless streak (0-1 this season and 0-5-1 to end 2007-08). … SMU's five goals vs. the Blugolds came from five different players — Madison Sienko (Mendota Heights, Minn.), Ingrid Klockars (Wheaton, Ill.), Katie Cachey (Orland Park, Ill.), Ashley Mileykovsky (Northbrook, Ill.) and Sheree Haslemore (Gore, New Zealand). … Haselmore's goal was the first of her collegiate career. … SMU's OT victory was their first since beating Finlandia 1-0 on Feb. 3, 2006. …  Madeline Lenz (White Bear Lake, Minn.) made her first career start Friday, stopping 32 of the 36 shots she faced. …  With their loss to UW-Eau Claire last Saturday, SMU fell to 0-2-1 in its last three season openers. … Alex Braun (Darwin, Minn.) scored her first collegiate goal to account for SMU's lone goal vs. the Blugolds last Saturday. … SMU has now allowed three or more goals in 19 of its last 25 games — including the Cardinals' last 11 straight. … The Cardinals — 0-1 on the road this year — won just two of 12 road games last season (2-8-2). … Friday's win was SMU's first in its last 14 games in which the Cardinals' opponent scored first (1-11-2). …  The Cardinals, who scored just nine power play goals a year ago, have already scored three power play goals this season.

Forester Notes: Today's game is the first of two games vs. Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponents for the Foresters, who face SMU this afternoon and St. Thomas on Sunday. … Sara Sveen scored twice in her first period of her  collegiate hockey career to lead the Forester offense vs. Chatham. Kim Herring, Melissa Kravich and Sam LePicier also scored vs. Chatham — and all three goals were the first of their careers. … Alyssa Wintermute stopped 16 shots en route to her second career shutout.
