WINONA, Minn. — Saint Mary's University men's hockey coach Bill Moore must be wondering if his team digested some tainted turkey during their Thanksgiving holiday.

Why?

Because it took eight days for the tryptophan to kick in.

The Cardinals gave up back-to-back goals less than 20 seconds apart midway through the first period and never recovered Friday evening, falling to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference defending regular-season champion Hamline 4-2 in a conference game at the SMU Ice Arena.

"It was a frustrating game," said Moore, whose team was whistled for 14 penalties totalling 47 minutes. "We took one step forward and two steps back. AT times, we played very well tonight, but at others, we showed that we still are just too undisciplined."

Dustin Fulton and Brian Arrigoni each scored first-period goals for Hamline, with Fulton's coming at the 8:48 mark, while Arrigoni notched his fourth of the season 15 seconds later.

Trevor Tolibas (Colorado Springs, Colo.) tallied his first collegiate goal at 15:16 of the first period to cut the Pipers' lead to one, 2-1, heading into the locker room after the opening 20 minutes.

The Pipers pushed their lead to 4-1 with goals by Arrigoni and Joe Long in the first six minutes of the second period,  while the Cardinals' offense couldn't stop spinning its wheels, as SMU was held without a shot in the second period until the 10:02 mark, and was outshot 27-6 in the middle period alone.

SMU would make things interesting when Ben Kitzmiller (Lambertville, Mich.) tallied his first goal as a Cardinal with 1:34 remaining in regulation, but that was as close as the Cardinals would get.

Scott Pederson (Lake Villa, Ill.) took the loss in goal for the Cardinals, despite stopping a career-high 48 shots. Beau Christian made 22 saves in pushing his record to 3-1-0 for the Pipers.

The Cardinals, who fall to 1-3-1 in the MIAC and 1-7-1 overall, head to St. Paul, Minn., on Saturday for their 7:15 p.m. rematch with the Pipers.
