Gustavus Match Summary
ST. PETER, Minn. — Saint Mary's University women's tennis coach
Jeff Halberg would have loved a different outcome.
But in the Cardinal head coach's grand scheme of things, Sunday's 9-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference loss to nationally ranked and conference-leading Gustavus meant little.
Now, Tuesday's match against St. Catherine, on the other hand ... .
"Gustavus is a such a deep, talented team," said Halberg, whose team dropped all six singles matches in straight sets to the Gusties, while managing to win just 14 games in the 12 sets. "We knew this was going to be an uphill climb — they are so good.
"But now we've got to regroup and get read for (Tuesday's match against) St.Catherine."
With Sunday's loss, the Cardinals dropped to 4-5 in the MIAC and are currently holding down the sixth and final MIAC Tournament spot with one match to play. SMU is one game ahead of St. Catherine and Carleton, which both have two matches left to play.
"The bottom line is, we have to beat St. Catherine, and then hope for a little help," said Halberg. "We're right in the thick of things — we'll just have to wait and see how it all pans out."
