WINONA, Minn. — A 5-2 loss to Lake Forest wasn't the worst thing that happened to the Saint Mary's University men's hockey team Friday night.

The worst thing? That would be St. Norbert's 3-2 loss to St. Thomas.

All that did was make the Green Knights mad.

And they took out their anger on the Cardinals.

St. Nobert scored two goals in each of the first two periods and rolled to a 5-1 nonconference victory over the Cardinals at the SMU Ice Arena.

“What can I say? St. Norbert is a good team — a very good team,” said SMU coach Bill Moore, whose team has now lost four straight in falling to 1-10-1 overall. “Our effort was there tonight. If we would have played like this last night (against Lake Forest), we would have won 5-2, rather than lose 5-2.”

The Green Knights certainly did, scoring their first goal three minutes into the opening period, then adding another nine minutes later to take a 2-0 advantage into the locker room after 20 minutes of play.

Tyler Allen pushed St. Norbert's lead to 3-0 three minutes into the second period, before SMU finally got on the board on an #A.J. Woodward# (Lenexa, Kan.) power play goal at 8:48. The Green Knights would regain their three-goal cushion before the period ended, then iced the win with their third power play goal three minutes into the final stanza.

Greg Moore (Woodbury, Minn.) finished with 38 saves for the Cardinals, while St. Norbert goalie Blake Biashor stopped 30 of the 31 shots he faced.

“I was very happy with the effort, but we are just too undisciplined,” said Moore, whose team was whistled for 19 penalties for 62 minutes in a game that saw more than 100 minutes in penalties. “We need to do a better job of keeping our emotions in check — we can't be taking 19 penalties in a 60-minute game.

“I'll take the effort I saw tonight, it's the rest of it we have to improve on.”

The Cardinals return to action Tuesday, playing host to UW-Stout in a 7:05 p.m. nonconference game at the SMU Ice Arena.
