WINONA, Minn. — For Saint Mary's University women's hockey coach Terry Mannor, there are good ties, and there are bad ties.

Friday evening's 3-3 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tie against St. Olaf was one of those good ties.

The Cardinals scored two goals in the final 10 minutes of the third period — the game-tying tally by Jamie Henneman (Countryside, Ill.) — to salvage the deadlock.

“Ties are always hard,” said Mannor, whose team will now hit the road to face the Oles in Saturday's rematch in Northfield, Minn. “To come back from two goals down late in the third period like we did, I guess you have to feel pretty good about (the tie).

“We didn't play all that well early,” Mannor added. “But we picked it up and really played well in the last 20 minutes.”

The two teams traded first-period goals, with Katie Cachey (Orland Park, Ill.) netting her team-leading sixth goal of the season for SMU.

The Oles, however, would then rattled off back-to-back goals — the first a powerplay tally by Katie Iraci in the second period and the other by Lauren Tomford just 50 seconds into the third.

Cierra Lopis (Macomb, Mich.) kicked off the Cardinals' comeback with her first of the season at 8:17, and Henneman completed it with her third of the season with 52 seconds remaining in regulation.

“It was good to see us battle back the way we did,” Mannor said. “Hopefully we gained a bit of momentum (in the third period) and that will carry over to (Saturday's rematch).”
