BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – For the second game in a row, the Saint Mary's University men's hockey team saw itself staring at a 3-0 second-period hole Saturday afternoon during the second day of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Hockey Showcase.
Unlike Friday, however – when SMU rattled off back-to-back goals to cut the gap to 3-2, only to fall to St. Thomas 4-2 in the teams' season opener – there was no digging out of Saturday's second-period hole Saturday.
The Johnnies scored four unanswered goals – including three straight off the stick of Karl Gilbert – in the first two periods in handing SMU a 4-0 setback at the Bloomington Ice Gardens.
“We did not play nearly as well as we did (Friday),” said SMU coach
Bill Moore, whose team is back in action Friday, traveling to UW-Stout for a 7 p.m. nonconference game. “We came out a little flat and never recovered. We did a nice job of bouncing back last night, but today, we just didn't have that same jump once we fell behind.”
Gilbert gave the Johnnies a 1-0 lead after the opening period, then added two more goals in the first seven minutes of the second period to push SJU's lead to 3-0. Gabriel Harren rounded out the scoring, netting his first of the season at 10:19 of the middle frame.
SMU goalie
Andy Scheib (Sun Prairie, Wis.) stopped 26 shots in his collegiate debut, while SJU's Stu Van Ess finished with 22 saves en route to the shutout.
