MOORHEAD, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University men's hockey team's performances against Concordia this weekend were like night and day.
And Cardinal coach
Bill Moore definitely liked day better than night.
Less than 24 hours after giving up three third-period goals in a 6-3 loss to the Cobbers in the teams' Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener, the Cardinals scoed the game's first three goals and never looked back in beating the Concordia 3-1 for their first win of the season.
“It's amazing how well this team can play when they stay within our systems,” said Moore, whose team moved to 1-1-0 in the MIAC and 1-5-0 with the victory. “Last night, we went into the third period with a 27-15 advantage in shots on goal, and yet we were down 3-2 — we just made too many undisciplined and mental mistakes.
“Today, we didn't play like that — and we were rewarded for it.”
Eric Tenvoorde (St. Cloud, Minn.) scored his second goal in as many games to get the Cardinals on the board seven minute into the opening period.
After a scoreless second period, the Cardinals kicked their offense into high gear, getting goals from
Vincent Unklesbay (Maplewood, Minn.) and
Chase Marshall (Maple Grove, Minn.) two minutes apart early in the third to take a commanding 3-0 advantage.
The Cobbers' foiled SMU goalie
Jason Horstman's (Faribault, Minn.) shutout bid with a powerplay goal at 7:47 of the third. Horstman did settlled for a 29-save effort en route to his first collegiate victory.
“I was really happy with the way the guys bounced back after (Friday's 6-3) loss,” said Moore, whose team is back in conference play on Friday, traveling to Hamline for the Cardinals' seventh straight road game, a 7 p.m. contest against the Pipers. “It's good to get that first win — it took a little longer than we'd have liked, but it's definitely nice to get the win.
“Hopefully we can pick up right where we left off on Friday against Hamline.”
