: The Cardinals found themselves staring out from another gaping second-period hole Saturday, as Augsburg raced out to an 8-2 advantage after two periods en route to a 9-3 conference win at the SMU Ice Arena. Augsburg had scored five unanswered goals and led 5-1 after two in beating the Cardinals 6-2 in the first game of the two-game series Friday in Minneapolis. … Saint John's, meanwhile, settled for a split in its conference series against defending regular-season champion Hamline last weekend. SJU won the first game 3-2 in St. Paul, Minn., but the Pipers had the upper hand in the rematch, posting a 4-1 triumph at the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn.

A Year Ago: SMU and Saint John's split their conference series last year at the SMU Ice Arena on Nov. 16-17. The Johnnies scored the game's first two goals and never looked back in beating the Cardinals 4-2 in the opener. SMU turned the tables in the rematch a day later, as the Cardinals scored three powerplay goals and goalie Dan Smith made 41 saves to lead SMU to a 3-2 MIAC victory, snapping the year's 0-4-1 start — and giving them their first win since a 5-4 overtime victory over Hamline on Jan. 26, 2007 — a span of 12 games.

Cardinal Notes: The Cardinals' three goals vs. Augsburg Saturday were scored by three different players — Tony Clafton (Grand Rapids, Minn.), Mike Glaesmer (Traverse City, Mich.) and Matt Staehely (Shorewood, Ill.). … Steve Murphy (Anchorage, Alaska) scored both goals for the Cardinals vs. Augsburg Friday. Morgan Shepherd (Brainerd, Minn.) and Jeff Miller (Portage, Mich.), meanwhile, both assisted on each of Murphy's goals. … The two-goal game was the third of the season for Murphy, who now leads the team with 10 goals and 16 points.  He is one of five players with 10 or more points. Glaesmer, #A.J. Woodward# (Lenexa, Kan.), Staehely and Anthony Bohn (Spring Hill, Fla.) are the other three, boasting 13, 12, 10 and 10 points, respectively. … Bohn and Woodward share the team lead in assists with nine. …  SMU's back-to-back losses to Augsburg extended its losing streak to five straight. … SMU's six goals, 10 assists and 16 points vs. Bethel on Jan. 30 all equaled the team's season highs. Trevor Tolibas (Colorado Springs, Colo.) got SMU on the board first vs. Bethel on Jan. 30, and Andy Roberts (Rochester, Minn.) netted a first-period tally vs. Lake Forest on Jan. 9. … Saturday's game vs. Augsburg was the last home game for SMU seniors Andy Roberts (Rochester, Minn.), Karl Reinke (Duluth, Minn.) and Karac Davis (Pittsburgh, Pa.).

Johnnie Notes: Saint John's loss to Hamline Saturday snapped the Johnnies' four-game winning streak. … Hamline's four goals scored were the most allowed by the Johnnies since giving up five in a 5-1 loss at Gustavus on Jan. 31. … Jake Hipp leads the team in scoring, boasting team bests in goals (11) and points (19). He is one of seven SJU players with 10 or more points. … Pat Connelly is second on the team in goals with 10, while Brent Brodersen and Clayton Rehm share the team lead in assists with 12. … Vince Wheeler has been the workhorse in goal for the Johnnies, starting 19 of the team's 23 games, while boasting a 2.94 goals-against-average and a .906 save percentage. … Twenty-four of SJU's 62 goals have come on the power play. The Johnnies have not scored a shorthanded goal this season. … SJU has scored the game's first goal 12 times in 23 games.
