ST. CLOUD, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University men's hockey team got off on the right foot Saturday evening, scoring a pair of goals in the first period of their Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game against Saint John's.
Unfortunately for the Cardinals, the right foot proved to be the wrong foot, as Saint John's responded with five second-period goals — including three in a two-minute span midway through the period — en route to an 8-2 conference win over SMU at the National Hockey Center.
Steve Murphy (Anchorage, Alaska) and
Mike Glaesmer (Traverse City, Mich.) sandwiched first-period goals around a tally by SJU's Jason Johannes, as SMU grabbed a 2-1 lead heading into the locker room at the end of one period.
Then the roof caved in on the Cardinals, as Jake Koehler knotted things at 2-2 with his fourth of the year three minutes into the second period. By the time the period ended Grant Ellena, Karl Gilbert and Conor Rooney (twice) also beat SMU goalie
Greg Moore (Woodbury, Minn.) to give the Johnnies a commanding 5-2 advantage heading into the game's final 20 minutes.
And things just seemed to go from bad to worse for the Cardinals in the third period, as Ellena and Dylan Decker would make it six unanswered Johnnie goals with their third-period tallies to round out the scoring.
The Cardinals, who fall to 2-12-1 in the MIAC and 3-20-1 overall, close out their season on Sunday, taking on the Johnnies in a 2 p.m. conference contest at the National Hockey Center.
