MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn. — In their last three meetings, St. Thomas has had the Saint Mary's University women's hockey team's number.

And that number has been one — or less.

The Tommies blanked SMU for the second straight time Friday evening, as UST's Jackie Carroll scored three goals — including two in the Tommies' three-goal third period — as St. Thomas rolled to a 5-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory.

“St. Thomas is a very good team, there's a reason they are ranked No. 7 in the nation,” said SMU coach Terry Mannor, whose team has now lost 4-1, 5-0 and 5-0 in its last three meetings with the Tommies. “I thought we played pretty well, we just weren't able to make the most of the (scoring) opportunities we created.

“There was a good portion of the game in which we controlled the play,” Mannor added. “But we just couldn't keep it up for 60 minutes. (St. Thomas) is a very skilled team and they played a very good game.”

Carroll accounted for the only goal of the opening period, as UST took a 1-0 lead into the locker room after the opening 20 minutes. Kristine Beese made it 2-0 with an even-strength goal less than two minutes into the second period, while Carroll tallied goals 2 and 3 32 seconds apart early in the third period, and Beese added UST's second powerplay goal of the game at 18:08 to close out the scoring.

Madeline Lenz (White Bear Lake, Minn.), who was coming off her first collegiate shutout last Saturday against Bethel, stopped 23 Tommie shots — including 11 in the first period. UST's Lauren Bradel, meanwhile, stopped all 18 shots she faced in recording St. Thomas' seventh shutout win of the season.

The same two teams are back in action Saturday, as Saint Mary's hosts UST in a 4 p.m. contest at the SMU Ice Arena.
