MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn.  — The Saint Mary's University men's hockey team doubled its offensive output from the previous night Saturday afternoon.

Unfortunately for the Cardinals, that meant a jump from one goal to two.

St. Thomas, meanwhile, improved its offensive output from seven to nine, as the Tommies got three goals from Parker Burgess and two goals and three assists from Andrew Kappers in handing SMU a 9-2 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference setback.

“It was a tough weekend all the way around,” said SMU coach Bill Moore, whose Cardinals dropped a 7-1 decision to the Tommies in the first game of the teams' two-game conference series Friday at the SMU Ice Arena. “St. Thomas is a very good team, and they proved that this weekend. I didn't think we played as well tonight as we did (Friday), we just couldn't seem to find a way to shut down their offense.”

That offense, led by Burgess and Kappers, scored three times in each of the three periods in handing SMU its third straight setback.

Burgess, Kappers and Alex Arnason gave UST all the offense it would need, as each beat SMU goalie Greg Moore (Woodbury, Minn.) in the game's opening 20 minutes. Tommy Healy (Rolling Meadows, Ill.) scored less than two minutes into the second period on the power play to cut the gap to 3-1, but Burgess and Kappers answered with their second goal each to push UST's lead to 5-1. Burgess then completed his hat trick to make it 6-1, before SMU's Colin McGlynn (St. Louis, Mo.) netted his first collegiate goal with 3:20 remaining in the second.

Rob Johnson, Arnason and A.J. Panchenko netted third-period goals to round out the scoring for the Tommies, who moved into second place in the MIAC standings with four games to play.

"We need to get better," Moore said. "St. Thomas is good — very good — but I don't believe they are six, seven goals better than we are. We need to find a way to play at our highest level for 60 minutes — against teams like (St. Thomas) nothing short of that will do."

SMU, which falls to 2-9-1 in the MIAC and 3-17-1 overall, returns to action Friday, traveling to Minneapolis, Minn, for the first of two games against Augsburg. The same two teams will then play Saturday in Winona. Both games are slated for 7:05 p.m.
