RED WING, Minn. — It wasn't quite the start Saint Mary's University men's golf coach Jeff Stangl was hoping for, but it was a start. 

“It was good to get out and compete,” said Stangl, whose Cardinals dropped a 307-323 decision to Macalester in the teams' season-opening dual meet at Mississippi National Golf Club Tuesday. “I thought we played some pretty good golf, we just had our share of bad holes, too.”

Tony Hynes (Lino Lakes, Minn.) led the way for the Cardinals, shooting a 78, while Rob Klein (Lake Bluff, Ill.) chipped in an 80. #D.J. Borgen# (Red Wing, Minn.), Ethan Austin (Northbrook, Ill.) and Ryan Brood (Woodbury, Minn.) rounded out SMU's top five, shooting rounds of 82, 83 and 90, respectively.

The Cardinals are back in action on Saturday, taking on Carleton in a dual meet at The Jewel in Lake City, Minn.
