Tough day on the links for Cardinal men

WINONA, Minn. — It wasn't quite what coach Jeff Stangl was hoping for.

The Saint Mary's University men's golf coach saw plenty of good shots during his Cardinals' dual meet against Carleton at The Bridges.

Unfortunately, he also saw far too many bad shots — including more triple bogeys than he cared to count — as SMU dropped a 322-327 decision to the Knights Saturday afternoon.

“We were close, we just shot ourselves in the foot a bit with some big numbers,” said Stangl. “We had too many big numbers, which was unfortunate, because there really was some pretty good golf played out there.”

Rob Klein (Lake Bluff, Ill.) and #D.J. Borgen# (Red Wing, Minn.) led the way for SMU, shooting nine-over-par 80s, while Tony Hynes (Lino Lakes, Minn.), despite two triples, finished with an 82 and Ryan Brodd (Woodbury, Minn.) added an 85.

Carleton's Turner Wadington claimed medalist honors with a 79, while Brian Gilmore and Trent Wells each tallied 80s and Brian Chesley added an 83.

“It was a tough day,” said Stangl, whose Cardinals are back in action next Saturday and Sunday, taking part in the Augsburg Invitational. “The Bridges is a tough, tough course, and if you are not on top of your game, it can really make for some tough going."
