WINONA, Minn. — Augsburg's Shannon Renne proved to be a one-woman wrecking crew Saturday afternoon, as the Auggie junior knocked down a conference-record nine 3-pointers in a 78-66 victory over Carleton.
Unfortunately for the Saint Mary's University women's basketball team, she hadn't cooled off much.
Renne drained 6 of 10 3-point attempts against the Cardinals Monday en route to a game-high 26 points, as she led the Auggies to their second straight 78-point performance — and their second straight win, a 78-65 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference decision at the SMU Gym.
The Cardinals and Auggie traded long-distance threes early in the opening half, with
Jessica Thone (Woodbury, Minn.) draining the first of her four 3-pointers to give the Cardinals a 12-10 advantage with just over 13 minutes remaining.
A Tracee Schrank layup and a Renee three-pointer gave the Auggies the lead for good, 15-12. Augsburg would build its first-half lead to as many as nine, 21-12 — completing its 11-0 run with a basket by Renne — before settling for a 33-26 advantage at the break.
Augsburg opened the second half with a 7-1 run to grab a 13-point, 40-27 advantage, as the Auggies never looked back, outscoring SMU 45-39 over the game's final 20 minutes to secure their second straight victory.
Thone finished with a team-high 22 points, while
Jess Miller (Carver, Minn.) added 15 and
Renee Pecarina (Winona, Minn.) added 10 for the Cardinals (3-8 MIAC, 4-10 Overall).
Along with Renee's game-high 26 points, the Auggies also got 14 points from Micha Sater and 12points from both Schrank and Brittany Dyshaw.
The Cardinals are back in action on Wednesday, when they travel to St. Paul, Minn., to take on Macalester in a 7 p.m. conference contest.
