Box Score HARRISVILLE, R.I. — The Saint Mary's University men's hockey team rang in the new year with a win Saturday afternoon.

Sort of.

The Cardinals' Jeff Miller (Portage, Mich.) scored the only goal in the shootout, to lift the Cardinals to a 5-4 victory over Nichols in the opening round of the Nichols Holiday Tournament.

In terms of overall records and official NCAA stat-keeping, the game goes into the books as a tie, but for Cardinal coach Bill Moore, a win is a win — even if it's officially a tie.

“For the tournament, the game wasn't decided by the five-minute overtime, so they went to a shootout, which we won 1-0,” said Moore, whose team will face Wesleyan — 4-2 winners over Lebanon Valley earlier Saturday — in Sunday's 3 p.m. championship game. “Officially, for NCAA purposes, the game is a tie, but we'll take the win anyway.”

The Cardinals, who fell behind 3-1 after two periods, scored three times in the game's final 20 minutes to force the overtime.

Trevor Tolibas (Colorado Springs, Colo.) scored SMU's second-period goal, while Kevin Wentland (Columbia Heights, Minn.), Nate Peterson (Cadillac, Mich.) and Anthony Bohn (Spring Hill, Fla.) scored in the third.

Jason Horstman (Faribault, Minn.) recorded 31 saves — while also stopping all three Nichols' players in the shootout — for the win.

“I thought we played pretty well,” said Moore. “Hopefully we can just keep the momentum building.”
