WINONA, Minn. – In the world of collegiate soccer, there are good ties and then there are bad ties.
For the Saint Mary's University women's soccer team, Saturday afternoon's 0-0 double-overtime stalemate against league-leading and unbeaten Concordia at Ochrymowycz Field, definitely fell into the good tie category.
“(Concordia) had more chances, but we created some good opportunities, too,” said SMU coach Eric Zimmerman, whose squad now sits at 2-2-1 in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and 5-5-1 overall. “But we created some good opportunities.
Cassie Hulett was phenomenal in goal.”
Hulett, a junior from Milwaukee, Wis., racked up 10 saves en route to her third shutout performance in the last four games.
“(Hulett) truly saved the (end) result,” said Zimmerman. “She simply made plays.”
The Cardinal defense held strong, despite enduring 21 shots from the Cobbers, including 10 that were on goal.
“This result was from heart and determination,” said Zimmerman. “We can definitely feel good about this tie.”
The Cardinals are now off until next Saturday, when they play host to Macalester in a 1 p.m. conference contest against Macalester.
