ST. PAUL, Minn. – In a season filled with plenty of highs, Saint Mary's University women's soccer coach Eric Zimmerman was hoping his Cardinals would have one more to add when his Cardinals squared off against St. Thomas in their season finale Saturday afternoon.

The Tommies, however, had other ideas, as Anna Strehlow and Hannah Gikling scored goals in the game's first 25:00 – and the Cardinals never recovered, in falling to St. Thomas 4-0 in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game UST's South Field.

“It wasn't quite the ending we were hoping for,” said Zimmerman. “We came out kind of flat and never really got into the flow of the game. St. Thomas is a very good team, we just weren't at the top of our game.”

Thanks to their quick start, the Tommies took a 2-0 lead into halftime, then added a pair of second half goals in locking up a third straight MIAC post-season berth.

Cassie Hulett (Milwaukee, Wis.) finished with three saves for SMU, while Allie Byron and Amanda Domeier combined for a two-save shutout for the Tommies.

“It's a disappointing way for the season to end,” said Zimmerman, whose team closed out the season 4-7-1 in the MIAC and 7-10-1 overall. “But I thought we played some very good soccer this season.”
