ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University men's hockey team, which surrendered four second-period goals in falling to Hamline 4-3 at the SMU Ice Arena Friday, hits the road for the second game in the teams' two-game conference series, traveling to Drake Arena for a 7 p.m. contest against the Pipers.

The Pipers scored four goals in the second period — two coming off the stick of Danny Vranek a minute apart midway through the stanza — as Hamline held off the Cardinals for a 4-3 victory at the SMU Ice Arena.

November 20, 2009: Hamline rattled off five unanswered goals — including two in a 24-second span early in the second period — en route to a 5-1 conference win over SMU at the Drake Ice Arena.

November 21, 2010: The Cardinals surrendered what proved to be the game-winning goal in the first minute of the third period, as Hamline held off SMU 3-2 to complete the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference sweep at the SMU Ice Arena.

Following tonight's game, the Cardinals are off until Dec. 3, when they travel to Milwaukee, Wis., for the first of back-to-back nonconference games against Milwaukee School of Engineering. Hamline, meanwhile, returns to action Nov. 26-27, taking part in the Adrian Tournament in Adrian Mich. The Pipers will play SUNY-Geneseo on Nov. 26 and host Adrian on Nov. 27.

It is also the second of five straight games against nationally ranked teams for the Cardinals — who square off against No. 15 MSOE on Dec. 3-4, before taking on Marian, which received votes in the latest USCHO.com Poll, on Dec. 10. … Friday's loss to Hamline snapped the Cardinals' season-high three-game winning streak. … SMU's three goals came from three different players — Chase Marshall (Maple Grove, Minn.), Kevin Wentland (Columbia Heights, Minn.) and Austin Balko (). … Marshall's goal was his first of the season, while Balko's was the first of his collegiate career. … Wentland's goal, meanwhile, was his team-leading fourth of the season. … Marshall added a pair of assists for a career-best three-point night. … Through seven games, the Cardinals still do not have a player with a two-goal game. … With his goal and assist vs. the Pipers Friday, Balko moved into the team lead in assists (7) and points (8). … The Cardinals' 21 goals this season have come from 13 different players, while 16 players have recorded at least one point. … Andy Scheib (Sun Prairie, Wis.) stopped 31 shots vs. the Pipers Friday, giving him 117 saves in four starts.
