ST. PAUL, Minn. — For the second week in a row, the Saint Mary's University women's hockey team left their head coach fit to be tied.
Literally, and figuratively.
The Cardinals, despite outshooting Hamline 30-19, managed just one goal — a
Dy-anna Stewart (Eden Prairie, Minn.) tally with less than four minutes remaining in regulation — as SMU settled for its second straight Friday night tie, a 1-1 decision vs. the Pipers at the State Fairgrounds Coliseum.
“We played very well — we dominated play, but we just couldn't buy a goal,” said SMU coach
Terry Mannor, whose team had tied Concordia 3-3 in the first game of their two-game series last weekend in Moorhead, Minn. “We attempted more than 60 shots, getting 30 on goal, but couldn't get one past (Hamline goalie Nicole Jones).
“It would have been nice to leave here with a win, but we did get a (conference point) — and in this conference, every point in important.”
Haley Johnson scored her second goal of the season midway through the first period to give Hamline a 1-0 advantage — an advantage the clung on to until the 15:54 mark of the third period, when Stewart netted her first of the season to tie things at 1-1.
Kaye Collier (Hibbing, Minn.) finished with 18 saves — including both shots in overtime — for the Cardinals, while Jones stopped 29 SMU shots in goal for the Pipers.
The same two teams will square off again Saturday in a 4 p.m. conference contest at the SMU Ice Arena.
