ST. PAUL, Minn. — For the first time this season, Saint Mary's University men's hockey coach Bill Moore struggled to find a silver lining in his team's performance Saturday evening against Hamline.

“We just didn't show up to play,” said Moore, whose team gave up two goals in each period in falling to the Pipers 6-2 in the second game of the teams' Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference series. “We came out slow to start the first period and just never recovered.

“It was probably our worst performance of the season, and that's disappointing.”

The Pipers scored twice in the game's first 10 minutes on goals by Tim Olson and Ryan Kupperman. SMU's Beau Braun (Darwin, Minn.) would net his first collegiate goal at 11:53 of the opening period to cut the margin to 2-1 heading into the locker room after 20 minutes of play.

Hamline didn't waste any time regaining its two-goal advantage, as Olson netted his second of the night just 1:16 into the second period. Brian Arrigon made it 4-1 with his fourth of the season at 15:56.

Kevin Wentland (Columbia Heights, Minn.) gave the Cardinals an offensive spark with his team-leading fifth goal of the season 11 seconds into the final period, but Hamline responded with back-to-back goals from Chris Berenguer and Cory Belisle to seal the win.

Jason Horstman (Faribault, Minn.) finished with 29 saves for the Cardinals, who fall to 2-2-0 in the MIAC and 3-5-0 overall, while Beau Christian kicked out 24 of the 26 SMU shots he faced.

The Cardinals are now off until Dec. 3, when they travel to Milwaukee, Wis., for the first of two nonconference game against Milwaukee School of Engineering.
