WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University men's hockey team, coming off a pair of tough Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference losses to Augsburg last weekend, return home for a pair of conference games against Saint John's this weekend. SMU hosts the Johnnies at 7 p.m. on Friday, and then at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Last Action: The Cardinals dropped both games of their conference series against Augsburg last weekend. SMU surrendered a pair of third-period goals, as the Auggies rallied from a 4-3 deficit to beat the Cardinals 5-4 in the opener last Friday at the SMU Ice Arena. Augsburg then completed the sweep with a 4-2 victory in Minneapolis, Minn. Saint John's, meanwhile, surrendered five goals in back-to-back losses to 10th-ranked Hamline last weekend, falling 5-4 in the opener last Friday in St. Cloud, Minn., then dropping a 5-2 decision in St. Paul, Minn., on Saturday.

Last Meeting — October 31, 2009: The Johnnies scored four unanswered goals — including three straight off the stick of Karl Gilbert — in the first two periods in handing SMU a 4-0 setback in the MIAC Hockey Showcase at the Bloomington Ice Gardens.

Saint Mary's Cardinal Notes: Vincent Unklesbay (Maplewood, Minn.) scored a goal in both games vs. Augsburg last weekend. Anthony Bohn (Spring Hill, Fla.) also netted a goal in Saturday's 4-2 loss to the Auggies, while Ben Kitzmiller (Lambertville, Mich.), Tommy Healy (Rolling Meadows, Ill.) and Blake Zemaitis (Mount Prospect, Ill.) accounted the Cardinals' other three goals vs. the Auggies Friday. … Healy's first-period goal was his first of the season. … Morgan Shepherd (Brainerd, Minn.) and Eric Tenvoorde (St. Cloud, Minn.) each had two assists vs. the Auggies Friday, and Shepherd added another helper on Saturday to finish with three assists on the weekend. … Along with his goal on Saturday, Bohn also collected his team-leading 12th assist vs. Augsburg on Friday, pushing his point total to a team-best 17. … Shepherd, who recorded his first two-goal game of the season — and the first multiple-goal game since recording his first collegiate hat trick on Dec. 7, 2007 — in SMU's 4-3 loss to St. Thomas on Jan. 29 —shares the team lead in goals (5) with Bohn. … Jason Horstman (Faribault, Minn.), who has stopped 40 or more shots twice this season — kicking out a career-high 42 shots vs. Concordia on Nov. 14, 2009 and 41 vs. St. Olaf on Jan. 15 — finished with 32 saves vs. the Auggies on Friday, while Andy Schieb (Sun Prairie, Wis.) kicked out 22 shots vs. Augsburg on Saturday. … SMU's 44 goals have come from 16 different players, while 21 different Cardinals have notched at least one point.  … The Cardinals have now scored a season-high four goals three times — going 0-2-1 in those three games (4-4 tie vs. Nichols, and 5-4 losses to Bethel and Augsburg). … The Cardinals have been outscored 37-14 in the game's middle period and 31-14 in the third period. … The Cardinals have led or been tied in the third period in nine of their 21 games this season. … The Cardinals' last three Friday games have all been decided by one goal. … SMU's Jan. 9 game vs. UW-River Falls was the second overtime game of the season for the Cardinals, who also tied Nichols 4-4 in overtime on Jan. 2.
