ST. CLOUD, Minn. — For the first two periods Friday evening, Saint Mary's University women's hockey coach
Terry Mannor must have felt like he was dreaming.
And it wasn't a very pleasant dream.
In fact, it's pretty safe to say it was more like a nightmare.
The Cardinals, battling for one of the five Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference playoff berths with six games left in the regular season, found themselves trailing Saint Benedict 3-0 with just 20 minutes remaining Friday evening.
Over those final 20 minutes, however, the Cardinals' offense did an about-face, as SMU erupted for four third-period goals — including the game-winner from
Katie Cachey (Orland Park, Ill.) with less than six minutes remaining in regulation — to beat the Blazers 4-3 in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest.
“The first two periods were like reliving last Friday all over again — we have chance after chance after chance, and nothing would go in,” said Mannor, whose team dropped a 4-1 decision to Augsburg last Friday, before bouncing back with a 5-1 win on Saturday. “It was the same thing today. We had plenty of good scoring opportunities — especially in the first period — but we couldn't seem to buy a goal.”
Saint Benedict, on the other hand, was making the most of its opportunities, as the Blazers scored three times in the second period to take what appeared to be a commanding 3-0 advantage into the final stanza.
Nicole Olson (New Brighton, Minn.) got the Cardinals on the board at 6:14 of the third period, then added her second of the game — and team-leading 12th of the season — a minute later to pull SMU within one, 3-2. Less than two minutes after Olson's second tally,
Brianna Drude (Oakdale, Minn.) pulled the Cardinals even — and set up Cachey's late-game heroics.
“This was game we needed to win (in regards to the playoff picture),” said Mannor, whose team improves to 7-4-1 in the MIAC and 10-9-1 heading into Saturday's 2 p.m. rematch with the Blazers. “Hopefully we can carry the momentum we built up in the third period into (Saturday's) game.”
