WINONA, Minn. — It may be there home ice, but Saint Mary's University men's hockey coach
Bill Moore might want to check with the rink manager and see if the ice might be tilted a bit.
At least it appeared that way Saturday afternoon.
The Cardinals managed just one shot on goal through the opening 20 minutes — and 18 for the game — and could not put one past SJU goalie Adam Anderson, as the Johnnies completed the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference sweep with a 4-0 victory at the SMU Ice Arena.
“We just couldn't seem to generate any offense,” said Moore, whose team was defeated 5-2 in Friday's opening game of the two-game conference series. “You really like to be able to get off to a fast start in the first period, and then ride that momentum — but today, we couldn't seem to get our feet going.”
SJU certainly didn't seem to have that problem, as the Johnnies appeared to be skaing downhill all afternoon, pelting SMU goalie
Jason Horstman (Faribault, Minn.) with 30 shots — including 21 in the first two periods combined.
The Johnnies got all the offense they would need midway through the opening period, as Connor Rooney beat Horstman for his sixth goal of the season. Rooney would net his second of the game with 37 seconds remaining in regulation — and in between, SJU sandwiched goals by Jascha Pettit and Pat McClure.
The Cardinals, who fall to 1-13-0 in the MIAC and 1-21-1 overall, are back in action next Friday, when they travel to Gustavus for the first game of their final two-game conference series of the season. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m., with the rematch slated for 7 p.m. Saturday at the SMU Ice Arena.
