Box Score ST. PETER, Minn. — Saint Mary's University men's hockey coach Bill Moore summed up Friday's game against Gustavus in one word: Wow.

“They are a very good team — offensively they are impressive,” Moore said of the Gusties, after watching Gustavus — behind two goals each from Ross Ring-Jarvi and David Martinson — handed the Cardinals a 5-1 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference setback at the Don Roberts Ice Arena. “They were impressive.”

The Gusties got on the board at the 13:18 mark of the opening period, as Ring-Jarvi rifled a shot past SMU goalie Andy Scheib (Sun Prairie, Wis.). Three minutes later, it was Martinson's turn, as the GAC senior recorded his team-leading 26th goal of the season to give the Gusties a 2-0 cushion heading into the locker room after the opening 20 minutes.

T.J. Ridley and Ring-Jarvi would added second-period goals for the Gusties, who pushed their lead to 5-0 on Martinson's second of the game at 10:31 of the third period. Nate Peterson (Cadillac, Mich.) finally got the Cardinals on the board at 11:33, as the junior defenseman tallied his second of the season off assists from Beau Braun (Darwin, Minn.) and Kevin Wentland (Columbia Heights, Minn.).

“Offensively, we just can't match them — Martinson's got 27 goals and our leading scorer has five,” said Moore. “I thought we worked pretty hard and battled to the end, we just don't have the firepower (Gustavus) does.”

The Cardinals will get another crack at the Gusties on Saturday, as SMU plays host to Gustavus in a 7 p.m. conference contest at the SMU Ice Arena.
