WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University men's hockey team, coming off a 5-1 conference loss to Gustavus at the Don Roberts Ice Arena in St. Peter, Minn., close out their 2009-2010 season Saturday, hosting the Gusties in the second game of their two-game MIAC series at the SMU Ice Arena. Puck drops at 7 p.m.

Last Night: Gustavus got two goals each from Ross Ring-Jarvi and David Martinson, as the Gusties handed SMU a 5-1 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference setback at the Don Roberts Ice Arena in St. Peter, Minn.

Saint Mary's Cardinal Notes: Nate Peterson (Cadillac, Mich.) scored his second goal of the season to account for SMU's lone goal vs. the Gusties Friday evening. … Beau Braun (Darwin, Minn.) picked up one of the two assists on Peterson's goal. It was Braun's first collegiate point. … Andy Scheib (Sun Prairie, Wis.) stopped a career-high 41 GAC shots Friday evening. … Last Saturday's loss to the Johnnies was just the third time in the Cardinals' first 23 games in which SMU has failed to score at least one goal. Two of those shutout losses have come vs. SJU. … Anthony Bohn (Spring Hill, Fla.) enters today's game vs. Gustavus as the team leader in assists (12) and points (17), while he shares the team lead in goals (5) with Morgan Shepherd (Brainerd, Minn.). … SMU's 47 goals have come from 18 different players, while 23 different Cardinals have notched at least one point.  … The Cardinals have scored a season-high four goals three times — going 0-2-1 in those three games (4-4 tie vs. Nichols, and 5-4 losses to Bethel and Augsburg). … The Cardinals have been outscored 41-15 in the game's middle period and 36-15 in the third period. … The Cardinals have led or been tied in the third period in nine of their 23 games this season. … The Cardinals have scored first in seven of their 24 games, but are just 1-6-0 in those seven contest. SMU has not won this season when its opponent scores first (0-16-1). … SMU's Jan. 9 game vs. UW-River Falls was the second overtime game of the season for the Cardinals, who also tied Nichols 4-4 in overtime on Jan. 2. The Cardinals were 2-0-1 in OT games a year ago.

Gustavus Gustie Notes: With their 5-1 win over Saint Mary's Friday — and Hamline's 2-2 tie vs. Conocordia ­— Gustavus locked up a share of the MIAC regular-season title. GAC holds a two-point lead over the Pipers with one game remaining in the regular season. … Friday's win was the Gusties' eighth in their last 10 games — Hamline had snapped GAC's season-high seven-game unbeaten streak with its 3-1 win on Feb. 12. … After opening the season 3-3-1, the Gusties have gone 14-2-1 in their last 17. … The Gusties have not lost back-to-back games all season. … Gustavus has been held to one goal in three of its five losses — a 2-1 loss to St. Olaf on Jan. 8, and 3-1 losses vs. UW-Eau Claire and Hamline. … David Martinson scored his team-leading 26th and 27th goals of the season in Friday's win over Saint Mary's. … With his third-period tally Friday, Martinson, who recorded at least one point in 24 of the team's 29 games a year ago in leading GAC to its first-ever NCAA Division III national title game, eclipsed his 26-goal effort of a year ago, when he finished second in Division III in goals scored. … Martinson, held without a point just four times through 24 games this season, currently leads the nation in goals (27) and goals-per-game (1.09), and is fifth in points-per-game (1.78). …  Ross Ring-Jarvi, who also scored twice in Friday's win over SMU, is the team's leader in assists (23) and his 36 points are second to Martinson's team-best 44. The two are also among eight GAC players with 10 or more points. … Gustavus has scored first in 16 of its 24 games, going 14-2-0. GAC is 3-3-2 when its opponent scores first. … GAC has outscored its opponents 39-20 in the second period — including 30-9 in conference play.
