WINONA, Minn. — What a difference a day makes.
Literally.
The Saint Mary's University women's hockey team lost its third straight Friday game Friday evening, as the Cardinals managed just one goal — for the third straight Friday — in a 4-1 loss to Augsburg in Minneapolis, Minn.
A day later, the Cardinals got back-to-back first-period goals from
Stevie Fiek (Rochester, Minn.) and never took their foot off the gas, as SMU earned a split in its Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference series against Augsburg with a 5-1 victory at the SMU Ice Arena.
Fiek, who picked up her team-leading 10th assist of the season in Friday's 4-1 loss, netted goals No. 5 and 6 to give SMU its 2-0 first-period lead.
Ingrid Klockars (Wheaton, Ill.) and
Erin Stenseth (Eau Claire, Wis.) added second-period tallies to make it 4-0 after two, and Klockars would net her second of the game, and seventh of the season, midway through the third period.
Kaye Collier (Hibbing, Minn.) stopped 11 of the 12 Auggie shots she faced, missing out on her fourth shutout of the season when Erin Leyden scored shorthanded 3:26 into the third period.
The Cardinals, who improve to 6-5-1 in the MIAC and 9-9-1 overall, return to action on Friday, traveling to Saint Benedict for the first of two road games against the Blazers. Game time Friday is set for 7:30 p.m.
