ARDEN HILLS, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University women's soccer team could not have picked a better time to put an entire 90-minute performance together.
Stuck in the midst of a two-game losing streak, in which they struggled to keep their opponents off the board early, the Cardinals not only got on the board first Tuesday afternoon in their Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener against Bethel, but they also kept the Royals off the board, as SMU kicked off conference play with a 1-0 victory.
“This was a great win for us,” said SMU coach Eric Zimmerman, whose team evened its overall mark at 3-3-0 with the streak-snapping win. “It was all about heart, passion and desire today — they left everything on the field.”
The Cardinals'
Amy Sibik (Onalaska, Wis.) netted the game's only goal less than 10 minutes into the opening half, and goalkeeper
Cassie Hulett (Milwaukee, Wis.) made it stand up, as the freshman stopped a career-high 18 shots in recording her third shutout of the season.
“This was a great team effort and a great way to kick off the conference season,” said Zimmerman, whose team is now off until Saturday, when they travel to Northfield, Minn., for a 1 p.m. conference game against Carleton. “It was good to see us get back to playing a complete 90-minute game.”
