MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University women's hockey team could not find a way to cool down red-hot St. Thomas Friday evening, as the Tommies scored two goals in both the first and second periods in handing SMU a 4-1 MIAC setback at the St. Thomas Ice Arena.
The Tommies, who — thanks in part to Gustavus' 2-1 loss to St. Catherine Friday night — moved into first place in the conference standings with the win, wasted little time getting on the board against SMU, as Kaylee Keys scored an unassisted shorthanded goal just 48 seconds into the opening period.
Jamie Tiede made it 2-0 nine minutes later, before the Cardinals'
Haley Coolsaet (Grosse Island, Mich.) cut the deficit to 2-1 with her team-leading seventh goal of the game at 13:09 of the opening period.
The Tommies then put the game out of reach with back-to-back goals five minutes late in the second period, as Jaci Lang and Christina Rozeske each scored their first goals of the season to gave UST a commanding 4-1 advantage.
Kaye Collier (Hibbing, Minn.) finished with 29 saves for the Cardinals, while Alise Riedel kicked out 11 of SMU's 12 shots for the Tommies.
The Cardinals (4-2-3 MIAC, 7-6-3 overall) get another shot at the Tommies on Saturday, as SMU hosts UST in the second game of their two-game conference series at the SMU Ice Arena.
