BLAINE, Minn. – For the first 52 minutes Saturday, the Saint Mary's University men's hockey team had an answer for everything St. Thomas threw at them.

When the Tommies' Travis Baker scored UST's third goal with 7:31 remaining in regulation, however, it went unanswered, as UST held off the Cardinals 3-2 during the MIAC Showcase at Fogerty Arena.

St. Thomas opened the scoring at 8:32 of the opening period, as Rob Philipp scored a power-play goal, beating SMU goalie Andy Schieb (Sun Prairie, Wis.) with a wrist shot to the short side.

The Cardinals would answer 10 minutes later, as Brad Fusaro (Soldotna, Alaska) netted SMU's first goal of the season off assists from Danny Wood (Wilmington, Ohio) and Andrew Ketterer (Peoria, Ill.).

Philipp netted his second of the game with four minutes remaining in the second period to give UST a short-lived 2-1 advantage – an advantage that lasted all of 1:22, as Kevin Wentland (Columbia Heights, Minn.) banged home a rebound off a Nate Peterson (Cadillac, Mich.) to tie the game 2-2 heading into the game's final 20 minutes.

Schieb kicked out 35 of the Tommies 38 shots Saturday, while UST goalie Drew Fielding finished with 22 saves in his first collegiate start.

The Cardinals are back in action Sunday, taking on St. Olaf in a 2:30 p.m. MIAC Showcase game at Fogerty Arena.
