ST. PAUL, Minn.  — For the second night in a row, one goal was all the Saint Mary's University women's hockey team could muster against Hamline Saturday evening.

And for the second night in a row, one goal was enough to earn the Cardinals key conference points, as SMU — coming off a 1-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory over the Pipers on Friday at the SMU Ice Arena — battled Hamline to a 1-1 tie, giving Saint Mary's there of a possible four conference points in their first MIAC series of the season.

“We played all right — at times we controlled possession of the play, but we had a hard time getting the puck into the middle of the ice,” said SMU coach Terry Mannor. “We weren't able to generate too many great scoring chances, but to open the season with three of a possible four conference points, I'll take that any day.”

The Cardinals got on the board first, as Haley Coolsaet (Grosse Point, Mich.) scored her first goal of the season to give SMU a 1-0 advantage after the opening 20 minutes. Hamline would knot things up before the second period ended, with neither team scoring in the third period or OT.

Sarah Gustafson (Esko, Minn.) — who kicked out 21 shots in recording her first shutout of the season — made 26 saves Saturday.

The Cardinals (1-0-1 MIAC, 2-2-2 overall) are back in action on Friday, traveling to St. Paul, Minn., for a 7 p.m. conference showdown with St. Catherine at Mariucci Arena. The two teams will then return to the SMU Ice Arena for Saturday's rematch at 4 p.m.
