MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — Last weekend, two goals was enough to give the Saint Mary's University women's hockey team three of a possible four points in the Cardinals' Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference series against Hamline.
Friday evening, the Cardinals scored as many goals in one night as they did all last weekend combined ¬— but could only come away with a single point, as SMU battled St. Catherine to a 2-2 overtime tie.
“We played very well at time, and then there were times where we just weren't as mentally sharp as we need to be,” said SMU coach
Terry Mannor. “It would have been nice to come away with a road win tonight, but a point is a point — and in this conference, every point is going to be important.”
Haley Coolsaet (Grosse Point, Mich.) provided all the offense for the Cardinals, as the sophomore — SMU's goal-scoring leader a year ago — netted her second and third goals of the season against the Wildcats.
Coolsaet scored the game's opening goal in the first period, then added her second of the game early in the second period. With her two tallies, Coolsaet has now scored SMU's last three goals, having also scored the Cardinals' goal in last Saturday's 1-1 tie against Hamline.
Sarah Gustafson (Esko, Minn.) finished with 26 saves in goal for the Cardinals.
The Cardinals and Wildcats square off again on Saturday, as SMU hosts St. Catherine in a 4 p.m. conference contest at the SMU Ice Arena.
