GameDay Preview
WINONA, Minn. — Less than 24 hours after knocking off the nation's eighth-ranked team in overtime, the Saint Mary's University men's hockey team was again looking for some late-game heroics.
This time around, however, No. 8 Milwaukee School of Engineering would have nothing to do with that, as the Raiders — staked to a 3-0 lead after the game's opening two periods — added three more third-period goals in handing the Cardinals a 6-0 nonconference setback at the SMU Ice Arena.
“Not our best effort, that's for sure,” said SMU coach
Bill Moore. “We didn't have that same tenacity as we showed (Tuesday). We just didn't have much jump in our step today.”
The Cardinals, who got a goal from
Bob Marx (Sioux City, Iowa) three minutes into overtime Tuesday in their 2-1 win over MSOE, found themselves trailing 1-0 after the game's opening period Wednesday, as the Raiders' Carl Lindblad scored a powerplay goal with just 18 seconds remaining in the stanza.
MSOE would add two more goals in the second period, including their second powerplay tally, before erupting for three goals on 16 shots in the game's final 20 minutes.
“(MSOE) is a very good team,” said Moore. “We competed hard against them (on Tuesday), but they took it too use pretty good today.”
The Cardinals (1-7-0 overall) are back in action on Friday, Dec. 2, when they travel to Northfield, Minn., for the first of two games against St. Olaf. Game time on Friday is 7:30 p.m., with the same two teams squaring off a day later at the SMU Ice Arena, also at 7:30 p.m.
