WINONA, Minn. — After giving up three power play goals in their first meeting with Gustavus on Friday evening, the Saint Mary's University women's hockey team clamped down on the Gusties' special teams in the rematch on Saturday.

It was stopping the Gusties while at even strength than haunted the Cardinals, as Gustavus scored twice in the second period and once more in the third in completing the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference sweep with a 3-0 victory at the SMU Ice Arena.

The first period belonged to goalies Kaye Collier of Saint Mary's and Danielle Justice of Gustavus, as the two combined to stop all 16 shots that came their way. Collier was the busier of the two, kicking out 11 GAC shots — including a glove save that robbed the Gusties' Sara Yunger of a sure goal off a one-timer late in the period.

The Gusties finally broke through 1:14 into the second period, as Mollie Carroll netted her fifth goal of the season. Meagan Wanecke pushed GAC's lead to 2-0 with her fifth of the season at 16:25, giving the Gusties a two-goal cushion heading into the game's final 20 minutes.

Wanecke then added her second of the game with seven minutes remaining in regulation to ice the win.

Collier finished with 35 saves for the Cardinals — including 16 in the second period — while Justice kicked out all nine SMU shots in recording the shutout.

With the loss, the Cardinals fall to 8-5-3 in conference play, and slip a point behind St. Olaf — 8-0 winners over Augsburg Saturday — for third place in the conference standings.

The Cardinals and Oles close out the regular season with a two-game conference series next weekend. SMU hosts St. Olaf at 7 p.m. at the SMU Ice Arena on Friday, then travel to Northfield, Minn., for the 3 p.m. rematch.
