WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University women's hockey team broke out of its “Friday funk” in a big way Friday evening at the SMU Ice Arena.
The Cardinals — who entered their first game of a two-game Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference series against Augsburg winless in their five conference games played on Fridays — left the SMU Ice Arena winless no more, as
Nicole Olson (New Brighton, Minn.) scored twice to lead Saint Mary's to a 5-0 victory over the Auggies.
For coach
Terry Mannor, getting that elusive Friday evening conference win was nice — getting it by scoring five goals was even nicer.
“It was a good win for us,” said Mannor, whose team dominated from start to finish, outshooting Augsburg 47-11 — including 17-3 in the opening period and 18-3 in the second. “We needed a breakout game like this. Everyone played well, and it was really nice to see us get our offense going again.”
Lauren Borkowski (Winona, Minn.) got the Cardinals on the board four minutes into the opening period, as the sophomore netted her first collegiate goal to give SMU a 1-0 advantage after the game's first 20 minutes.
Olson took it from there, pushing the Cardinals' lead to 3-0 with back-to-back goals less than three minutes apart early in the second period.
Haley Coolsaet (Grosse Island, Mich.) scored her team-leading eighth goal of the season and
Dana Kreuser (Maplewood, Minn.) added her third of the year as SMU tacked on two more goals in the final period to ice the win.
Sarah Gustafson (Esko, Minn.) stopped all 11 Augsburg shots in recording her second shutout of the season, while Alex Hall finished with 42 saves for the Auggies.
The Cardinals (6-2-3 MIAC, 9-6-3) hit the road in search of the conference sweep of Auggies, as they travel to Minneapolis, Minn., for a 7:05 p.m. match against the Auggies.
