WINONA, Minn. — Call it the Ryder Cup, Saint Mary's style.
The Saint Mary's University and Carleton men's golf teams had a Ryder Cup match of their own on Saturday afternoon at Cedar Valley Golf Course, with the Cardinals coming away with an 8 1/2 - 6 1/2 victory.
“It was a fun way to end the spring season,” said SMU coach Jeff Stangl. “The guys played well in some pretty tough conditions.”
The format was a modified Ryder Cup competition, with each team being subdivided into teams of two. Each twosome played six holes of best ball, six holes of alternate shot and six holes of best shot, with a point awarded for each of the three segments.
Since Carleton had five teams of two and SMU only had four, the Cardinals' fourth group –
Patrick Suchla (Racine, Wis.) and
Zach Cizek (St. Paul, Minn.) — played against two Knight teams.
And Suchla and Cisik came through, get all three points against Turner Wadington-David Steefel-Moore to seal the Cardinals' win.
In other matches, SMU's
Tim Wolford (Maple Grove, Minn.)-
D.J. Borgen (Red Wing, Minn.) tied Carleton's Aaron Buckley-Ted Harrington 1 ½-1 ½,
Ethan Austin (Northbridge, Ill.)-
Will Johnson (Minneapolis, Minn.) beat the Knights' Brian Gillmore-David Sacks 2-1, while
Jimmy McGuire (St. Paul, Minn.)-
Erik Qvale (Minnetonka, Minn.) battled Brian Chesley-Michael Hantho to a 1 ½-1 ½ tie.
Saturday's match was the final match of the spring season for the Cardinals.
