WINONA, Minn. — For three periods, the Saint Mary's University women's hockey team had an answer for every St. Thomas goal.

Unfortunately for the Cardinals, the fourth period — the five-minute overtime — was sudden death, and when UST's Morgan Olson scored the game-winner with 57 seconds remaining, SMU did not get a chance to answer, as the Tommies handed Saint Mary's a 3-2 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference setback at the SMU Ice Arena Saturday.

After a scoreless first period  — thanks in large part to the play of UST goalie Alise Riedel, who stopped all 11 SMU shots in the game's opening 20 minutes — the Tommies finally broke through, as Tara Baago beat SMU goalie Sarah Gustafson (Esko, Minn.) for the game's first goal at 11:50.

SMU answered right back — 27 seconds later, to be exact — as Haley Coolsaet (Grosse Island, Mich.) scored her fourth goal of the season to knot the game at 1-1.

UST again took a one-goal lead at 14:32 of the third period on a goal by Maria Bothwell, and, again, SMU had the right answer, this time coming off the stick of Dana Kreuser (Maplewood, Minn.), as the senior netted her first of the season at 17:54 — forcing overtime, and Olson's unanswered game-winner.

Gustafson finished with 23 saves for the Cardinals, while Riedel kicked out 30 of the 32 SMU shots she faced.

The Cardinals (1-4-2 MIAC, 4-7-3 overall) get another shot at the Tommies on Sunday, as SMU travels to Mendota Heights, Minn., for a 2 p.m. conference game at the St. Thomas Ice Arena.
